— What it is
Black mold, defined.
Black mold is the common name for Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold that grows on water-damaged cellulose materials — drywall, wood, ceiling tile, insulation. It is greenish-black, often slimy when active, and produces mycotoxins documented in the medical literature as relevant to indoor air quality. Many other molds also appear black, so visual identification is not enough. Laboratory speciation is the only reliable confirmation.
Mold X Inspectors performs independent, third-party black mold inspection and testing across Los Angeles County. Our protocol follows ANSI/IICRC S520:2024 and our laboratory partners are AIHA-LAP accredited. Because we never perform remediation, our findings are not influenced by anyone's interest in being hired for the work that follows.
— Protocol
How we identify Stachybotrys.
Visual + thermal
Documented walk-through with infrared imaging of suspected wet assemblies and moisture meter readings on every cellulose surface in the area of concern.
Air sampling
Spore-trap cassettes inside the suspected room and a separate exterior baseline, processed for genus identification and Stachybotrys-specific count.
Surface speciation
Tape-lift or swab samples from visible suspected growth, sent to AIHA-LAP labs for confirmed Stachybotrys chartarum identification.
Independent report
Findings, lab reports, and recommended next steps delivered in a written report formatted for insurance, real estate, and legal use.
